The ones that make my heart race and my hands shake. I switch between my Whopper Plopper and the Ned rig, but all I catch are smalls and dinks. I know they can show me the way, but I'm getting frustrated. Then, BOOM! My top water disappears beneath the water. I set the hook, but it's a miss. I'm getting closer. So, I head up river, against the bank. Another top water strike and a miss. Time to switch it up. I grab my trusty Ned rig and bounce it low and slow along the rocks. And finally, I feel it. The big one. My heart is thumping as I reel it in. I hold the massive smallmouth in my hands, feeling grateful and in awe. But, as I release it back into the river, I know this is only the beginning of my search for bigger and better catches. The journey to find big, fat, monster smallmouth will never end. In this crazy early spring smallmouth fishing adventure, I take on the high and fast water of the Milwaukee River with my kayak. I didn't expect to catch so many smallmouth in these conditions, but the topwater bite was on fire! Using my trusty Whopper Plopper, I managed to hook ten smallmouth in no time. Kayak fishing in high and fast water can be tricky, and I had some tough moments, but I managed to navigate through still catching ten smallmouth. The water was moving so fast that it became difficult to use finesse fishing techniques like the Ned rig, so the topwater bite became the go-to tactic. In this video, I share some valuable tips on early spring bass fishing, including the baits that work for me in April and May. I love fishing creeks in the spring for fat smallmouth that have come up into the shallows for spawning. I also love the intimacy that comes with creek fishing. The Cedar Creek which empties into the Milwaukee River provides such an awesome opportunity for this kind of close quarters fishing. On Memorial Day 2022 I hike for 6 hours down the Milwaukee and up Cedar Creek. I get into some awesome spots where I basically site cast to smallies both top water and with the Ned Rig and I get some exciting action.
